Proud to be part of Ilderton Minor Hockey!
“A mentor in the sports arena can help you grow as an athlete and a person. They can give you confidence and push you to achieve your definition of success. Sports mentors not only give you tips on how to succeed in your sport of choice but they also help you become a better person.”
This weekend the Boys U13B team played in the Niagara on the Lake Harvest Classic tournament. While they didn’t achieve the outcome they had hoped for, they achieved something just as great.
Four young men, currently playing U18B or Jr C, stepped up to help mentor this U13 team. When asked to spend the weekend with the team, they didn’t think twice, they jumped in and poured into these boys.
They lead the warmup before every game, went with them on a team hike, taped sticks, played music, stood up for them, gave pre-game chats, encouraged individual players, gave feedback after the games, participated in a video review session, cheered more for their successes then the boys did at times. They were fully invested, bringing the coach to tears at the final game.
Watching these young men give back to the sport they’ve loved to play, and take on a leadership role was truly heartwarming!
This is what minor hockey is all about. Helping to raise kind young men and women that give back to their community.
IMHA is lucky to have great coaches willing to take the time to encourage these young men, and look forward to the future where they step up and become great coaches and mentors to the next generation.
